unAmerican
A congresswoman accused Obama of being unAmerican, and hinted that other congressmen might be too.
She is resurrecting a witch-hunt, the foul devil that ruined the lives of so many during the Red Scare.
And it made me think.
If there ever comes a day when a certain group is persecuted, so much that even association with that group could lead to prosecution, I will claim allegiance to that group, if by doing so I could defend free speech.
If, for example, the Red Scare were to revive. If asked if I were a communist, I would respond:
"I am not a communist, but if I will be punished for saying that I am a communist, then I say that 'I am a communist.'"
We need to protect free speech. For in order for us to hear the truth, others need to be allowed to speak the truth, regardless of its consequences.
The Savior was crucified for speaking the truth. And I will not become part of that mob.
Because of free speech, America was the only country where the Gospel could be restored. After a thousand years of religious intolerance, where the inspired who spoke against the ruling church would be martyred, a nation was founded upon the principle of liberty. Including liberty of speech, which is the foundation of the freedom of religion.
No other land at that time was ready to receive the Gospel, for any prophet would have been quickly cast into prison or murdered. Even in this free country, the prophet who founded this church was murdered by an unruly mob, for his offensive speech.
I doubt that 'communist' will ever again be the buzzword that we persecute. But we must be ready to defend against any such witch hunts. We must defend the liberties upon which this nation was founded.
The closest thing I can think of today is 'terrorist.' It is a word that hardly any want to align themselves with, but one with which some have been labeled and detained indefinitely.
And so, to keep my pledge: I am not a terrorist. But if I will be punished for saying that I am a terrorist, then 'I am a terrorist.'"

I'm glad you wrote this. I'm also glad you're not a terrorist.
ReplyDeleteI wrote a song expressing this sentiment - "(Didn't Know I Was) Unamerican" during the 04 election. Crazy to think it's still relevant today.
