Palin Around

McCain/Palin have tried to taint Obama's reputation through the logical fallacy of guilt by association. (See this attempt at character assassination.)

To show you how ridiculous guilt by association is, I'll apply it to myself.

My father was an adulterer and is an atheist.
My mother fornicated with her live in boyfriend for years.
I lived with an uncle who viewed pornography.
I have a cousin who smokes weed and is in prison for rape.
I consider two gay men, Dennis and Randy, as uncles. I often visited their house, sometimes alone, while growing up.
One of my dearest childhood friends is homosexual.
One of my favorite college professors counseled a couple to get an abortion while he served as a bishop.

I must be a sexual deviant. Just look at who I pal around with.

My wife would say otherwise.

And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure if I had enemies who had millions in campaign contributions and who were advised by Rove, they could dig up associations even more damning than these.

And as far as belonging to a church with an outspoken pastor goes:

No Mormon can deny that Brigham Young was a prophet. Yet Brigham said:

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p. 266). Also, "The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, page 269).

And "Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." (Journal of Discourses, Volume 10, page 110.)

I'm glad I've never heard a Mormon talk about "the other race" this election.

And for other Christians, you don't have to go farther than Palin:

Dinosaurs and man palled around 7,000 years ago, built the pyramids together, and dino fossils were put here by God to test our faith.

Witches are real, and are out to get us.
Women shouldn't speak in church.

And for you Catholics out there, laughing it up at us Mormons and Protestants, just recall:

The history of some of your popes
The Crusades
And the Dark Ages.

Yep. I'm friends with some crazy people. I've had some crazy church leaders and crazy teachers. And I'm so glad to live in America, where we have the right to say crazy stuff. And I bet it's the same for you.

Fun activity: List some of the questionable people you associate with.

  1. Did you know I had Pakistani friends? Say "Pakistan" to some people 'round here and they get a little nervous.
