Confused and Rejected
I once broke up with a girl by email.
She was my first girlfriend. I was 21 or 22. I knew nothing about women.
It was really frustrating, because we emailed back and forth for a while, and she seemed to misinterpret everything I said. It went from me wanting a break to her never wanting to see me again.
And she kind of liked me.
I've had an anonymous person posting on my blog for the last month or so. Today anon. went a little too far on a comment, so I rejected it. I've never rejected a comment before.
Anon. is having the same problem my girlfriend had. She's misinterpreting everything that I write in the worst possible way. But in even worse ways, because she does not even know me, let alone like me. I'm sure if we could speak face to face, we would be more civil, and realize that we have much more in common.
Or she might punch me in the face.
I am weak in writing, so that you may misinterpret my words. And not everything I write is true. Not that I'm lying. I mean, it is my opinion, and my thoughts, which are not always the same thing. But I hope you'll find truth in it. It will be much harder for you to find if you are searching for faults rather than wisdom. Fault-finding requires neither talent nor imagination. You can gain truth if you look for it.
I recently wrote a post on how our news needs to do a better job covering foreign material, and suggested that it is rather Americocentric. From that Anon. insinuated that I delight in the suffering of children.
She's confused me—someone who thinks we need a better comprehension of the causes of the suffering that we might lessen it—with those who delight in abomination.
America is not a country, it is an empire. Our policies and wars have an effect that reaches far outside our own borders. We are the enforcers of the global status quo, and we have the possibility of being the catalyst for change.
I do not want America to be an empire. I'd rather we minded our own affairs, and had good relations with all countries. But inasmuch as we are an empire, and are dominating the world, we should use that influence for good.
In order to do that, we need to be better informed. And the news would be a great tool for that purpose.

I think Anon. is crazy. She is almost to the level of Sean Hannity. The thinking that everything democratic is wrong or evil, or that everything conservative is close-minded and selfish, is exactly what is hurting our country.
ReplyDeleteThat having been said, I do agree with Anon, on a few things:
1: Barack Obama is not as great as everyone thinks he is.
2: Showing pictures of dying people does not constitute a good argument against war. I could do the same with the horrors that Saddam committed against his own people and argue that that's why we should have gone in. Or better yet, a post of all the gruesome murders in Chicago. We should outlaw Chicago.
