Hell: Who makes the cut?
Deciding who goes to hell is a fun game. It keeps me awake at church.
A Utah (Mormon?) artist Jon McNaughton has drawn a picture "One Nation Under God" of the saved and unsaved in America.
His website has a neato feature; you can scroll over the faces of the people in the picture, and it tells you who they are. Another website has parodied it.
My problem with this is that the people he cast into hell are "others." They are "those sinners" instead of "us sinners." I just wrote about this; it's a big problem in Utah.
For example, he puts Hollywood people, abortion girl and her abortion-loving Supreme Court Justice boyfriend, lawyers, politicians, the liberal media, and evolution professors in hell.
What about the hypocrites that Jesus loved so much? Where's the smug self-righteous Christian high-fiving the pregnant lady? Not there, because that, uh, would include us.
My favorite was this guy:
Looks like the rule to "love your neighbor" ends at the American border. In all other wars we killed wops, japs, krauts, spics, chinks and towel-heads; those people are obviously not our brothers. It's okay to kill non-Americans. Kill all the towel-heads you want and you can wear your uniform proudly right next to Jesus.
Ok. It's out of my system. But I'm still in Utah.

Dante in his Inferno, put the following people in hell:
The unbaptized (including his hero Virgil) for being born before Jesus.
Gays. For being gay (an favorite theme of Christians).
Fat people - gluttony
The greedy - hard for rich people to get to heaven.
The angry and lazy. Interesting combination.
People who commit suicide. Because one miserable life wasn't enough?
The violent.
Several popes for heresy, nepotism
Several politicians for being excellent politicians. And here we have a match with McNaughty's list.
Nephi's List
Those who think they're smarter than God.
The rich who despise the poor. "Their treasure is their god."
People who refuse to see and hear.
Liars.
Those who commit whoredoms.
Murderers.
This list actually matches McNaughty's pretty closely. But he forgets the vital ingredient of humility that is necessary when judging others:

Who cares what some self righteous artist thinks. The Third Reich made excellent use of art to spread their views. Was it artistic? Of course. Was it humanistic? If you had blue eyes and blonde hair. That's me!!
ReplyDeleteI really really like the parody site. And as an old Atheist, I'm not really too concerned about the "after-life". My afterlife is my progeny. Rock on little people.
