Obama the new FDR
In this speech, FDR says:
“We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace:
business and financial monopoly,
speculation,
reckless banking,
class antagonism,
sectionalism,
war profiteering.
... Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me. And I welcome their hatred!"
Businesses have never been bigger and more powerful. War has never been so profitable. The divide between rich and poor has never been greater. And it seems to me that the Republican party exists to cater to the wishes of big business. And the poor are convinced by their millions in advertising to go along with an agenda that is against their own interests.
What am I? A socialist? Or a libertarian? I'm a little of both. I think every fit man should work to provide for his family. But I realize that not everyone has the same opportunities in this life. The rich should give some of their money to the poor to lift up their less fortunate brethren. But should the government forcibly take our money?
Money is power. Those who have the most of it have the most power. If the government, which is made up of individuals chosen by the people, is weaker than the upper class, then the upper class rules our nation. Perhaps the income tax is to the rich what police and courts are to the poor: a check against revolution. I prefer having those whom I elect run this country, rather than someone who happens to have a lot of money.
But even that wish is less than reality. No elected official can stop the industrial war machine. And Fox News shows us what happens to someone who stands up to big business.

NEVER did Jesus EVER teach that we should TAKE from the rich and give to the poor. He taught that we should give willingly. I think that the high taxes on the rich are ridiculous. Flat tax - just like tithing, the church has sooooo much money and it is because people give willingly and don't feel like they are being gipped by having to give more than their neighbor. They give more because they can, not because they are forced to. (Also they know their money is not going to idiotic things like "greener church buildings") With his tax plan he is going to decrease philanthropic giving and make people want to hold on to their money. Wealthy people are not criminals ("income tax is to the rich what police and courts are to the poor"), most of them have worked very hard and sacrificed a lot to get where they are. Steve will have gone through about 15 years of post high school education by the time he is making any money. He will have sacrificed countless things including time with his family to get where he his and we will have massive amounts of debt to pay off. Under Obama we will not have the money to pay down our student loans because A) He will be screwing over doctor's pay checks with his health plan and B) When we start making money it is going to be taken from us and given to crackhead joe down the street who won't get a job and would rather work the system. I cannot support a man or his policies that will take our hard earned money away from us just to give it to an ungrateful person who can't get their rear end off the couch and do something for them self. I am TOTALLY for the gov't stepping in when help is needed, but the abuse of the system is gigantic and will only get worse under Obama. Sorry for the ranting...I must be on my period.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Force bad. And Steve works hard. But Steve will never be part of the Upper class. He might become part of the upper-MIDDLE class. But the upper class makes up less than 1% of the population, and they hold an undue influence over our country.
ReplyDeleteI can totally see where you're coming from, Crystal. But doesn't that just substitute one incorrect generalization for another? Of course not all rich people are evil. But not all poor people are lazy "crackpot joes." Either sweeping generalization does damage to someone.
ReplyDeleteI think that's the problem with politics on a national level. Issues become incredibly reductive in order to apply to a huge group of people. People are then no longer people; they become categories which don't accurately describe them.
