Somali Pirates: Just defending their country?

One pirate, Sugule Ali, said, "We don't consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas."

This article alleges that European countries are exploiting Somalia's ocean resources by overfishing and polluting.

I knew there was something redeeming about them.

  1. Liked the link to the article. I think there IS something redeeming about their fight against exploitative wrongs against their country.

But I'm not sure that kidnapping people and holding them hostage is the right way to go about showing off those redeeming qualities.

Seems to me like a Grapes of Wrath situation—looking for someone to shoot, but no single, obvious person to blame. They go out with their guns to find one anyway, and they get the boat captain—which doesn't really help them plead their case.

Then again, I might do the same thing if a presumptuous country dumped nuclear waste on my beach.
