Ron Paul on Iran Sanctions

He opposes the sanctions because they are detrimental to our national security. The rest of Congress puts our nation in jeopardy for political gain.
Part 1.

Paul reminds that the CIA instigated regime change in Iran back in 1953. We put in a dictator, and the whole thing blew up in our face.

Al Qaeda wants us to go to war in the Middle East. It will hurt us financially, and help them recruit people against us.

If we make preliminary attacks, we will as guilty as the Japanese during Pearl Harbor.

Iran is not capable of attacking us.

They are not a threat. They cannot even make enough gasoline for themselves. This policy will backfire and hurt us.

Part 2.

This is like our war with Iraq. We instituted sanctions and bombed them, killing thousands of children.

If anyone thinks taking away gasoline from the common person in Iran, will make them want to get rid of the Ayatollah . . . it does exactly the opposite.

These sanctions will only push them toward China, India, and Russia. They'll have a much closer alliance with those countries.

We prove China to be more capitalistic than we are. They want to buy the oil, we want to take it by force.

Our national security is threatened by this. We are overstretched, we are broke. Our enemies want to bog us down and bankrupt us. They are achieving what they aimed for.

Part 3.

One of his colleagues voted for the bill, but knew it would be ineffective and impossible to enforce. Iran is surrounded by countries that have nuclear bombs (India, China, Israel, Pakistan). Iranians do not have a history of territorial expansion.

What I see here is propaganda, to build fear in people for what is likely to come (like in Iraq). This is going to lead to hostilities because we are building up fears.

We talk of peace at the same time that we pursue war.

Iranian scholar Reza Aslan suggested that our sanctions hurt the middle class, who are the only ones capable of establishing a democracy in Iran.
